Android and iOS auto update app from store

We have two mobile apps in the App Store and Google Play and send updates pretty frequently. They are built using Titanium SDK 3.5.0.GA. As these apps are distributed in the stores and not from our server (not Enterprise apps), how can I ensure that their updates are automatically downloaded and installed on devices that already have them?

I update/increment the app version numbers in appropriate xml files and info.plist before they are uploaded to the stores. For Android I've made sure that the Play Store setting for Auto-update apps is set to "Auto-update apps at any time" and for iOS that the iTunes & App Store has Automatic Downloads on for Apps. However, our apps are not updated when a newer version exists.

I KNOW this is possible (if only on Android) as I get notified that apps (like Chase, IMDB, NOAA, Netflix) have been updated on my HTC ALL THE TIME. So what am I missing?

I have already added a function to redirect the device to the store if a newer version exists, but there are many cases where the a user is restricted on the device from accessing the stores because their company purchases the devices. So it is imperative that they get downloaded and installed automatically. Please HELP!
